Det var hyggeligt at mødes

Fresh back from a sortie to Copenhagen and environs, I was suprised to find that in the meantime Denmark had come to us. Over the next few months, the city is hosting 'Superdanish', a Danish sponsored cultural fair designed to promote themselves overseas. Held at venues throughout the City, the fair features numerous exhibitions, presentations, concerts and readings. Even the COC is getting into the act with the danish opera (yet Margaret Atwood penned) "The Handmaid's Tale".

Off the well-worn North American tourist loop, Denmark is a true gem. It is remarkable in that it is both the most liberal (ie. egalitarian) and culturally astute place anywhere. Where else would it be socially acceptable for a drug-based 'sovereign' hippie colony and an iconic opera house to co-exist side by side? If anything, Denmark is on the cusp of a plausible future... one which I would have no problem living in.

While on the subject, if one ever finds themselves in Copenhagen, I strongly suggest a stay or at very least a drink in the public bar of the best place I've ever stayed. Located in the heart of the city, Mick and Blodwyn's is truly an original - and at very least - superb experience.
